{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when safety workers were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track track officials can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is currently investigating the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled and a safety warning flag was raised in that zone"
"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
