Debunking Venezuela Victory Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.
Synthetic pictures claiming to show Nicolás Maduro detained after his apprehension by the United States have gained tens of millions of impressions online.
How Fake Pictures of Maduro Surfaced Rapidly
The first fake synthetic picture seemingly displaying him being escorted off a plane emerged shortly after. This image was not shared any verified US channels; it was instead posted on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was generated or edited with generative AI.
More AI-generated pictures began to spread in the ensuing hours, appearing to show additional perspectives of the leader detained. Discernible identifying marks on the graphics show they originated from an Instagram account named ultravfx.
SynthID indicates the further pictures were likewise created or altered Google AI.
Authentic Image Released but Fakes Persisted
The former US president shared the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. Yet following the authentic image was published, AI-generated images kept circulating but were altered to incorporate the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.
Digital forensics indicate these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art profile. Once again, analysis says these subsequent pictures were created or altered Google AI.
Key Points:
